En attendant le 14 novembre, date de la remise des prix, le jury américain des National Book Awards a choisi vingt livres. Parmi elles, cinq oeuvres de débutants, deux autobiographies et un recueil de nouvelles.

Les finalistes comptent parmi eux cinq lauréats du prix Pulitzer, un ancien lauréat du National Book Award et trois anciens finalistes du National Book Award. Par ailleurs, six des vingt livres ont été publiés par des éditeurs de petite taille, indépendants ou de presses universitaires.
