La fondation des National Book Awards a dévoilé sa première sélection dans les catégories "Fiction", "Non-fiction", Poésie", "Littérature traduite" et "Littérature jeunesse". Le prestigieux prix littéraire américain doit être décerné le 20 novembre. Une liste de finalistes sera communiquée le 8 octobre.

Marlon James, auteur de Brèves histoires de sept meurtres publiés chez Albin Michel en 2016, est sélectionné avec avec Black Leopard, Red Wolf chez Riverhead, tout comme Colson Whitehead (Sag Harbor et Zone 1 en 2014 chez Gallimard puis Underground Railroad en 2017 chez Albin Michel) avec The Nickel boys, de Colson Whitehead (Doubleday). Par ailleurs, on retrouve le premier roman de Julia Phillips, Disappearing Earth, sorti en France sous le titre de Dégels (Autrement, août 2019, traduit par Héloïse Esquié).

Dans la catégorie "Littérature traduite" figurent notamment Death is hard work de Khaled Khalifa publié en français aux éditions Sindbad en 2018 sous le titre La mort est une corvée, La femme aux pieds nus de Scholastique Mukasonga (Gallimard, 2015) et Cristallisations secrètes de Yoko Ogawa, paru chez Actes Sud en 2013. Dans cette catégorie, notons qu'il s'agit de livres écrits dans dix langues différentes. 145 publications ont été proposées au jury.

Dans la catégorie "Littérature jeunesse", on retrouve Alexander Kwame, qui a publié Frères chez Albin Michel Jeunesse pour son livre The Undefeated et Laurie Anderson, auteure des Petits véterinaires chez Pocket jeunesse.
